Dilip Nunisa meets Birendra Daulagupu Barman in Guwahati; discusses Barman–Dimasa–Kachari issues
Haflong October 2: Former Dima Halam Daogah (DHD) leader Dilip Nunisa today called on Birendra Daulagupu Barman, Senior Advisor to the Hairimba Barman Samity—an umbrella organisation of Dimasa Kachari Barman communities living across Assam—at Keshav Bhawan, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed pressing issues affecting Barman, Hojai, Kachari and Dimasa Kachari communities in Assam and Nagaland, including those residing on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River.
The discussions reportedly centred on socio-cultural preservation, language revival, and development concerns of Dimasa Barman Kachari populations scattered across multiple districts, as well as the functioning of the Barman Dimasa Kachari Development Council established under the 2003 Memorandum of Settlement.
Following the meeting, the Dimasa Peoples Council (DPC) Assam Central Committee issued a statement expressing thanks and gratefulness to Birendra Daulagupu Barman for his sustained efforts to revive and preserve Dimasa Kachari culture, language, and identity in Assam and India.
The DPC highlighted Barman’s perseverance in championing the cause of Dimasa communities living outside Dima Hasao district, particularly in areas where institutional support for cultural and linguistic development remains limited
The Hairimba Barman Samity functions as a key representative body for Dimasa Kachari Barman communities across Assam, working in coordination with organisations like the DPC and development councils.
Dilip Nunisa, former chairman of the DHD, has consistently advocated for the democratic demand for “Dimaraji”—a separate state for Dimasa-inhabited areas in Assam and Nagaland—to ensure better cultural and linguistic development for all Kachari sub-groups.
The meeting comes amid ongoing calls from Dimasa leaders for government intervention on long-pending welfare and development issues affecting communities in Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, Hojai, and other districts.
