NFR Successfully Restores Katakhal-Bairabi Rail Line

 Guwahati, 12^th September, 2026:

 

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) successfully restored the affected Jamira-Bairabi stretch of the Katakhal-Bairabi rail section on 12^th September, 2026, within just 10 days of the incident on 3^rd September, 2026 when soil erosion close to the railway track was triggered by heavy rainfall, affecting approximately 70 metres of railway track. The erosion had extended up to 40 metres from the track centre, necessitating the temporary suspension of train services.

 

The restoration works were carried out under exceptionally challenging conditions, including continued adverse weather, unstable ground and difficult road access conditions to the affected location. Undeterred by these constraints, NFR swiftly mobilised manpower, heavy machinery and essential materials at the affected site. Railway officials, engineers and field personnel worked round the clock, day and night, to stabilise the vulnerable area and rebuilt the damaged formation to make the track safe for train movement. Their sustained 24x7 efforts enabled the critical rail link to be restored safely within days.

 

Following completion of the restoration, a successful trial run with a locomotive and one coach was conducted over the restored stretch at 16:30 hrs on 12^th  September, 2026, confirming its fitness for train movement. Train No. 55669 (Silchar-Sairang) Passenger became the first train after the restoration of rail track to pass safely through the affected stretch. Train services over the Katakhal-Bairabi section will resume from 13^th September, 2026, in a phased manner. This swift restoration reinforces NFR's commitment towards maintaining safe and dependable railway connectivity, even amid difficult terrain and severe weather conditions.
