NFR Intensifies Drives across All It’s Stations and Railway Premises to Ensure Safe & Clean Drinking Water

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has carried out intensive water-quality monitoring drives across its stations and railway premises, giving top priority to the health, safety and well-being of passengers and its work force. As part of this continuing initiative, drinking water samples are being collected from passenger-use points and subjected to systematic physical, chemical and bacteriological examinations to ensure compliance with prescribed safety standards. As part of the initiative, water samples were collected and tested on 21^st September, 2026, at Guwahati and Kamakhya stations covering important physical and chemical parameters.

During the latest drive conducted on 21^st September, 2026, water sample from the Waiting Hall at Guwahati station was examined for pH, turbidity, total hardness, nitrate, iron, residual free chlorine, chloride, alkalinity, fluoride and calcium. Each parameter serves as an important health safeguard such as pH indicates chemical balance and acceptability; turbidity reveals suspended impurities; hardness and calcium reflect mineral content; nitrate and iron are monitored to prevent excess exposure; and chloride and alkalinity influence taste and water stability. Fluoride within the prescribed range supports dental health, while adequate residual free chlorine confirms effective disinfection against waterborne contamination. The sample conformed to the limits specified in the report.

At Kamakhya station, two filtered-water samples were tested, one from Platform No. 1, Vat No. 3 and another from Platforms No. 2 and 3, Vat No. 2. The samples were examined for the same standards, done at Guwahati station. The available physicochemical results were within the limits specified in the respective reports. Bacteriological examination was also undertaken to detect microbial contamination and assess protection against waterborne illness. NFR is also undertaking regular cleaning of water storage tanks and maintenance of water coolers, pipelines, taps and other water-supply installations, with prompt corrective action wherever deficiencies are detected.

NFR undertakes regular water sampling, laboratory examination and residual-chlorine monitoring as part of a preventive, passenger-focused approach. These intensive drives enable timely identification of variations and prompt corrective action, reinforcing NFR's commitment to providing clean, hygienic and safe drinking water throughout its network.
