IPF postpones proposed indefinite bandh over council nomenclature issue

Haflong, September 21: The Indigenous People’s Forum (IPF) has postponed its proposed indefinite bandh, which was to include the National Highways and railways, over the use of the nomenclature “Dima Hasao Autonomous Council” in place of “North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council”.

The decision was taken at an Executive Committee meeting of the IPF held on September 19, where members reviewed an earlier decision to call an indefinite bandh if the order issued by the Principal Secretary was not withdrawn within 14 days.

After detailed deliberations, the committee resolved to review the earlier decision and postpone the proposed bandh for the time being, citing the larger interest and convenience of the general public of the district as well as the IPF community.

In a press release issued on September 21, the IPF stated that the proposed indefinite bandh would remain postponed until further decision on the matter.

The organisation said the decision was taken after considering the possible inconvenience to the public, particularly as the proposed agitation would have affected road and rail connectivity in the district.
