National Handloom Day observed in Haflong

Haflong, August 7: The 12th National Handloom Day was observed in Haflong on Thursday with a programme organised by the Department of Handloom and Textile, Dima Hasao, to highlight the rich handloom tradition of the region and acknowledge the contribution of local weavers.

The programme was held at the office premises of the Additional Director of Handloom and Textile, Haflong. Naren Malakar, Additional Director of Sericulture, attended the programme as the chief guest in the presence of officials and other dignitaries.

As part of the observance, local handloom weavers were felicitated for their contribution towards preserving traditional weaving practices and promoting the socio-economic development of the community. Handloom products made by more than 100 weavers were also displayed at the venue.

Mayuri Killingpi, In-charge Additional Director of Handloom and Textile, speaking on the occasion, dwelt on the history of handloom in India and its significant role during the freedom movement. She also stressed the importance of preserving traditional weaving practices and encouraging the younger generation to take up the craft.

Malakar said Assam was among the States in the country known for its rich indigenous handloom traditions. He also underlined the close link between sericulture and handloom and the need to promote the two sectors in a coordinated manner.

Several successful weavers shared their experiences and spoke about their journeys in the handloom sector.

The programme also provided an opportunity to showcase the traditional weaving skills and products of local artisans, besides highlighting the need for greater support and market opportunities for weavers.
