Gauhati University Observes 80th Independence Day

 Guwahati, August 15, 2026: Gauhati University marked the 80th Independence Day today. Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta hoisted the flag on campus in the presence of Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma, Secretary of Classes Dr. Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Treasurer Shri Chandan Talukdar, faculty members, officers, and staff along with their children.

Prof. Mahanta opened his address with greetings for the day and a simple reminder that the nation moves forward only when every citizen plays their part.

Looking back, he paid tribute to India's freedom fighters and traced Gauhati University's own roots to that period, recalling Gopinath Bordoloi's role in setting it up. What stands today, he said, is built on the vision of that generation.

From there, he turned to the road ahead. He walked the gathering through the University's progress in academics, infrastructure, and research, and gave them something to look forward to: bigger announcements, including new hostels, are coming on establishment day.

Prof. Mahanta also spoke about the flood relief sent to the recent flood affected areas of Assam along with the conservation of the 18th century Vaishnavite manuscripts. He also mentioned the research being carried out by ANRF PM Prof. B. N. Goswami,  on the recent floods in Upper Assam. He noted that the study is looking into the causes behind this year's floods and their impact on the region, with the aim of helping the University and the state respond better to such events in the future. He described it as a clear example of the University's research being put to direct use for the people of Assam.

With the tricolour flying over the campus, the day carried the mix of ceremony and warmth that has become the University's own way of marking Independence Day.
