Reconciliation Programme Between Dimasa and Zeme Communities Held at Haflong
Haflong, May 22: In a significant step towards restoring and strengthening the age-old brotherhood between the Dimasa and Zeme communities of Dima Hasao, a reconciliation programme was held at New Boro Haflong on Friday.
The historic programme witnessed the participation of representatives from the Zeme Council, Jadikhe Naisho Hoshom, Zeme Students’ Union, ADSU, DSU, DMA, ZMA, civil society organisations from both communities, along with noted social leader Ramkuambe Zeme.
Following detailed discussions and consultations, representatives of both communities signed a historic reconciliation agreement aimed at promoting peace, harmony, mutual respect, and cooperation between the two communities.
The agreement stated that the Dimasa and Zeme Naga communities have shared social, cultural, and economic ties since time immemorial, maintaining peaceful coexistence and mutual cooperation through generations. However, misunderstandings and communication gaps during 2009 led to conflicts that caused loss of lives and property on both sides, weakening the traditional bonds between the communities.
Both parties acknowledged the pain and suffering caused by the past conflict and agreed to move forward without placing total blame on either side. The agreement emphasised forgiveness, understanding, and the revival of the traditional spirit of unity practised by their forefathers.
As part of the agreement, both communities resolved that in the event of any future dispute, violence would not be resorted to. Instead, a joint committee would be formed to de-escalate tensions and resolve issues through dialogue and mutual consultation.
The reconciliation programme, organised by civil society organisations representing both communities, concluded with an exchange of gifts between the Dimasa and Zeme representatives as a symbol of renewed friendship and unity.
The agreement was signed by Arup Kumar Gorlosa and Jonabe Riame on behalf of their respective organisations.
