Nikhil Bharat Bangla Sahitya Sammelan’s Haflong branch observed Ekadash Bhasha Shaheed Day in Haflong on 19 May.

Haflong, 19 May : The observance of Ekadash Bhasha Shaheed Day is no longer confined to the Barak Valley; communities across India now mark the day with due respect. Continuing the annual tradition, the Haflong branch of Nikhil Bharat Bangla Sahitya Sammelan held a commemorative programme at the Haflong Music College grounds on Tuesday.

The event featured songs, recitations and a panel discussion on the significance of the language movement, paying tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the mother tongue. The ceremony began with the lighting of a lamp and floral offerings at a temporary Ekadash Bhasha Shaheed memorial. Present to perform the rites were Prof. Shyamananda Choudhury, president of the Haflong branch; branch secretary Rajat Kanti Nath; Prof. Sakir Hossain Laskar; senior journalist Anup Biswas; and reporter Biplab Dev, among other dignitaries.

Speakers recalled the sacrifices of the language martyrs and urged the younger generation to remain vigilant in preserving the dignity of their mother tongue. The programme drew local literature enthusiasts, students and culturally active residents.
