Haflong Intellectuals Rally for Gauhati High Court Bench in Barak Valley

Haflong, May 10: An intellectual meet organized by the Haflong District Bar Association at the Agricultural Guest House here on Sunday threw strong support behind the demand for a permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court in Barak Valley, urging that Dima Hasao be included under its jurisdiction.

Academicians, lawyers, social workers, intellectuals, and representatives from various organizations in Dima Hasao attended the event, highlighting the hardships faced by litigants. Speakers pointed to the long-distance travel to Guwahati, heavy financial burdens, and barriers to easy access to justice. They argued that a Bench in Silchar or Barak Valley would immensely benefit Dima Hasao residents due to geographical proximity and historical ties to the undivided Cachar region.

Advocate Dharmananda Deb delivered a detailed PowerPoint presentation on the historical background, constitutional aspects, and practical need for the Bench. He framed the movement as "a struggle for accessible justice for the people of Barak Valley and Dima Hasao."

Dais dignitaries included Dr. Sarbojit Thaosen, Renu Mahajan, Alen Jeme, and N.C. Hills Autonomous Council representatives. A delegation from Silchar—advocates Dhruva Kumar Saha, Prasenjit Deb, Shantanu Nayek, Debomita Chakraborty, and others—also participated.
The gathering passed a unanimous resolution to ramp up democratic movements, public awareness campaigns, and collective efforts to press the demand.
