Fee Structure of the Five-Year Integrated Masters’ Programme (FYIMP)
The FYIMP was conceived as a forward-looking academic initiative designed to provide students with a seamless and multidisciplinary pathway from undergraduate to postgraduate education in alignment with the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. One of the key advantages of the programme is that students enrolled in FYIMP are ensured direct progression to the Master’s level without the requirement of appearing in any separate entrance examination.
The programme was introduced with a self-financing fee structure to recover only a part of the expenditure incurred in introducing this entirely new programme. This was necessitated considering that Gauhati had to create additional academic and infrastructural capacity to accommodate undergraduate teaching under the NEP-2020 curriculum framework. The programme was launched without any separate financial assistance in the form of grants, infrastructure support, or additional manpower. To provide adequate academic infrastructure for the FYIMP students, the present Vice-Chancellor, soon after assuming office, facilitated the conversion of an unused hostel into classrooms within a very short period using internal resources. Further, as part of GU's efforts to create a conducive teaching-learning environment for the UG students creation of additional physical facilites are now in progress. Two additional storeis in the exisiting NEP Coordination Centre building is already completed and ready for classes from the coming academic session. An entirely new Academic block is being constructed expeditiously which will fully address all the requirement of physical space for UG programmes. These are being done utilising university's own meagre resources and not even a fraction of these costs are burdened on the students.
The reports published in a section of the media regarding a fee hike at Gauhati University are not based on facts. There has been no increase in fees in any programme. It is further clarified that, in comparison to other universities in Assam, the fee structure of the FYIMP programme at Gauhati University is comparatively lower than that of many other universities. At the time of introduction for the session 2023-24, the per-semester fees for FYIMP were fixed at Rs. 16,500/- for Science stream subjects and Rs. 14,500/- for Arts stream subjects. It may also be noted that although FYIMP is categorized as a self-financing programme, the fees collected meet only a fraction of the actual expenditure incurred by the University. Despite this substantial financial burden, Gauhati University reduced the fees by Rs. 2,000/- from the academic session 2025–26 onwards for even and subsequent semesters in order to lessen the financial burden on students and their families.
In a significant student-friendly initiative, Gauhati University has now decided to extend fee waiver benefits to eligible BPL students enrolled in FYIMP from the current semester. This decision reflects the University’s continued commitment to inclusive and equitable access to higher education.
However, any further reduction in fees may place significant constraints on the University’s limited internal resources, which could eventually affect the continuation of certain FYIMP programmes.
Further, from the 7th semester onwards, students enrolled in the FYIMP programme will be considered at par with regular postgraduate students, and the fee structure applicable to regular PG programmes will be followed.
Gauhati University remains steadfast in its commitment to providing quality higher education in alignment with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, while continuing to uphold the principles of academic excellence, affordability, inclusiveness, and student welfare.
We respectfully request all concerned to verify the facts with the administration of GU before communicating or circulating any information among the public or through the media.
