Over 100 competitions across 8 days: Gauhati University’s Varsity Week showcases holistic learning in action
Guwahati, March 2, 2026: With over 100 competitions spanning sports, literature, music, dance, fine arts and theatre, Gauhati University’s eight-day Varsity Week 2026 concluded on a high note, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to holistic learning and all-round student development.
From quiz and debate to athletics and kabaddi, from creative writing and one-act plays to group dance and solo performances, the campus transformed into a vibrant arena of talent and teamwork. The sheer scale and diversity of participation reflected Gauhati University’s larger vision of nurturing leadership, creativity and resilience beyond the classroom.
Addressing the closing ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta emphasised that Varsity Week represents education in its fullest sense. “Competitions are not merely about winning or losing. They build confidence, discipline and leadership. The enthusiasm displayed across fields including sports, culture and literature strengthens the University’s academic spirit and community bond,” he said, adding that such platforms prepare students to face life with courage and self-belief.
A special music competition held in tribute to the beloved artist Zubeen Garg drew overwhelming participation, adding emotional resonance to the celebrations. The festival also featured a grand Cultural Procession, joined by noted Assamese singer Dipanwita Deka, which showcased the rich heritage of Assam and the Northeast across language, arts, cinema and sports.
The closing ceremony was attended by Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma; DSW Dr. Ranjan Kumar Kakati; Deputy DSW Dr. Kuldeep Patgiri; Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Shri Ankur Bharali; singer Mausumi Saharia; actress Chetana Das; Harold Mohan (Member, Central Executive Committee, ABVP), along with faculty members and students.
Varsity Week 2026 concluded with renewed energy, leaving behind memories of camaraderie, excellence and shared pride, reinforcing Gauhati University’s role not only as an academic institution, but as a vibrant cultural and leadership hub of the region.
