Gauhati University pays tribute to Assam Movement martyrs; VC recalls contributions of Late Prof. Kumud Nath Sarma

Guwahati, December 15: Gauhati University today reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the legacy of the Assam Movement and honouring the contributions of eminent intellectuals during a programme held at the University campus.

Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the Swahid Bedi, a memorial dedicated to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Assam Movement to protect the identity and existence of Assam.

Through its Department of Law, in association with the Late Prof. Kumud Nath Sarma Commemoration Committee, the University organised a Book Release Programme to mark the publication of Kumud Nath Sarma Rachanavali, a comprehensive volume compiling the bilingual writings of Prof. Sarma. The book has been published by Lawyer’s Book Stall, Guwahati.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Mahanta recalled the pivotal role played by Prof. Sarma in the Assam Movement.

“Prof. Kumud Nath Sarma was not only an interpreter but also played an instrumental role in the Assam Movement, providing a roadmap towards the resolution of the Assam agitation. He was an intellectual, a protagonist, and a strong defender of the regionalist ideology,” he said.

Highlighting Prof. Sarma’s contribution to institutional and intellectual development, the Vice-Chancellor added:

“His strength lay in institutional building and domain expertise. He did not confine himself to theoretical propositions of law alone; he also implemented what he believed from an ideological standpoint.”

The programme was also attended by Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma, Former Judge of the Gauhati High Court, who reflected on the enduring relevance of Prof. Sarma’s thoughts and principles. Justice Sharma also emphasised Prof. Sarma’s contribution to the world of Assamese literature.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Aparajita Baruah, Head, PG Department of Law, GU., Gauhati University, and the vote of thanks by Mr. Gaurav Goswami, Teaching Associate, PG Department of Law.

The event highlighted the University's role as a centre of intellectual engagement, social responsibility, and remembrance of those who shaped Assam’s socio-political and academic landscape.
