Decades of Congress Misrule Weakened Assam’s Demographic Security, Says Sarbananda Sonowal
Guwahati, 28 December, 2025: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal said decades of Congress rule weakened Assam’s demographic security by allowing illegal infiltration and settlements on government land, undermining the interests of indigenous communities.
“The roots of illegal infiltration in Assam lie in the Congress’s years of political appeasement. It was the Congress that allowed and legitimised illegal settlements on government land, compromising Assam’s demographic and cultural balance. Congress always undermined indigenous people’s interests replacing them with illegal settlers through infiltration policy,” Sarbananda Sonowal said.
Sarbananda Sonowal said decisive action taken by the BJP to correct these “historic wrongs” had unsettled those who benefited from prolonged neglect.
“The people of Assam have not forgotten that during the six-year mass movement, 860 martyrs were murdered under Congress government. The party was never aligned with the interests of the greater Assamese society,” Sonowal said.
Sonowal added that the BJP’s governance focus was rooted in respecting the aspirations of indigenous people and restoring balance through lawful and firm measures. “Congress is worried as BJP has been working to correct historic wrongs, and uphold indigenous aspirations and interests.”
Referring to the address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonowal said Mann Ki Baat continues to inspire citizens across the country. “The programme rejuvenates the mind and rekindles purpose and energy, encouraging people to recommit themselves to constructive work and nation-building,” he said.
Sonowal tuned in to the programme from Bishnu Mandir, Powerhouse, Kahilipara, under Booth No. 40 of Dispur Legislative Assembly Constituency in Guwahati.
