Hemtap Hill Trek: A Hidden Eco-Tourism Gem in the Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong Landscape
Kaziranga, 3 November: Silimkhuwa Village, Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong: Nestled amid the lush greenery of Assam’s Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong landscape, the newly developed Hemtap Hill Trek promises visitors an unforgettable blend of adventure, culture, and conservation. Stretching across a 6 km trail with an elevation ranging from 85 to 400 metres, the trek offers both half-day and full-day experiences, beginning as early as 6 AM.
The Hemtap Hill trail meanders through dense forests and scenic ridges, providing opportunities for wildlife and birdwatching enthusiasts to marvel at the region’s biodiversity, with 51 recorded bird species. Trekkers often encounter the Hoolock Gibbon, the only ape species found in India, along with deer, leopards, and elephants, showcasing the area’s thriving wildlife.
Adding to its allure, the trek follows ancient trade routes that once connected remote hill communities, while visitors can also explore sacred groves that embody the deep spiritual ties between the Karbi people and nature. Along the route, natural streams, a community-conserved water reservoir, and a restored stone quarry offer refreshing glimpses of sustainable coexistence between humans and their environment.
The experience culminates at the Ethnic Culinary Centre, where guests can savour traditional Karbi cuisine, prepared using locally sourced ingredients. Beyond recreation, the trek stands as a testament to community-led conservation efforts, spearheaded by local residents under the guidance of Kaziranga Eco-Development Committees.
With panoramic views of the Kaziranga National Park and its surrounding hills, Hemtap Hill Trek is emerging as a model of eco-tourism that harmoniously blends nature, heritage, and sustainability, inviting visitors to explore Assam’s wild beauty while contributing to its preservation.
