Six Differently-Abled Citizens Honoured with Governor Assam Vishwakarma Samman.
Guwahati, 18 September, 25: Assam marked Vishwakarma Puja by honouring six differently-abled citizens with the "Governor Assam Vishwakarma Samman". The award recognised their contributions in arts, education, science, social service, sports, and entrepreneurship.
The awardees included Maulik Rabha of Goalpara, a visually impaired musician who has worked to preserve Assamese musical traditions through his music school. From Karbi Anglong, Nibedita Ghosh, a fully visually impaired teacher and motivational speaker, was recognised for her work in literature and education. Bajali’s Dharani Kalita was honoured for his innovation in turning manual tricycles into electric vehicles for differently-abled users.
Nagaon’s Rakesh Banik was acknowledged for his social service, including a 2,500-kilometre journey to help flood victims in Assam. From Kamrup Metro, para-athlete Abhishek Gogoi was awarded for his success at the Special Olympics and national competitions. Jorhat’s Akoni Baruah was recognised for his role as an entrepreneur, promoting local handicrafts and creating jobs.
The Governor praised the recipients as the “Vishwakarmas of society,” calling them examples of courage and service. The event also highlighted government schemes such as the Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme, which offers financial support, training, and rehabilitation services for differently-abled citizens in Assam.
