Pandu College Marks 65 Years of Excellence and Educational Legacy

 Guwahati, 5^th Sep, 2026: The 65th Foundation Day of Pandu College (Autonomous) was celebrated with enthusiasm on 5^th September, 2026 at the college campus. The occasion brought together members of the college fraternity, distinguished guests, teachers, students and well-wishers to commemorate the institution’s long and significant contribution to higher education. The celebration also marked Teachers’ Day, with the occasion serving as a tribute to the dedication and invaluable contribution of teachers in shaping generations of students and strengthening the academic legacy of Pandu College.

The celebrations commenced in the morning with the hoisting of the flag, followed by a floral tribute and the distribution of prasad. Dr. Sanchay Jyoti Bora, Principal, Pandu College (Autonomous) addressed the gathering where he emphasised on the need of upholding transparency, responsibility and accountability as an autonomous institution. The opening proceedings were marked by a spirit of reverence and collective participation.

The formal programme began thereafter with the commencement of the open session and the rendition of the college anthem. The invited guests were formally welcomed and felicitated. This was followed by lighting of the ceremonial lamp and a flute performance. Dr. Chandana Sinha Roy, Vice-Principal delivered the welcome speech on behalf of the Principal, Pandu College. The welcome speech highlighted the importance of inter-departmental collaboration and integrating AI tools for teaching-learning. It also presented the future planning of the college with respect to its infrastructure development and integrating new courses, specially focused on skill development, under the NEP 2020 guidelines. The speech was followed by a song performance by Mr. Mayukh Sen, Best Singer of the college.

One of the major highlights of the Foundation Day celebration was the address delivered by the distinguished guest, Mr. Manoj Kumar Goswami, the eminent Assamese writer, recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Chief Editor of the Assamese daily “Amar Asom”. His speech focused on the impact of AI and the ethics of its use. He also discussed the brain drain that has impacted India due to the lack of innovation, skill based training and applied knowledge. He regretted the lack of fund provided to the universities for meaningful research. He concluded his speech by talking about the greater Assamese nationhood and the need to inspire our youth to connect modern innovation with traditional learning and the legacy of Assamese literature which includes writers like Saurav Kumar Chaliha and Nabakanta Barua. The speech was followed by a musical performance by Dr. Biswajita Barua, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry.

A significant part of the celebration was the recognition of academic excellence and progress across disciplines. The programme also included a session conducted by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Pandu College (Autonomous). IQAC, Pandu College felicitated the teachers who have been awarded PhD degree in the previous academic year, namely Dr. Anup Kumar Das, Dr. Ankur Jyoti Talukdar, Dr. Diksha Sharma, Dr. Debashree Kaushik and Dr. Rubina Azmeera Begum. Ms. Sampa Talukader was felicitated for the recent patent secured by her team. The celebration also acknowledged the achievement of Mr Sourajyoti Ray of the Department of Chemistry, who received the Best Poster Prize from the American Chemical Society (ACS) at the 36th CSIR Symposium held at Dibrugarh University. 

Special recognition was accorded to Harshita Dutta of the Department of Geography and Sabnam Sahina of the Department of Chemistry for securing first-class first positions at Gauhati University.

The Best Graduate Awards recognised outstanding academic performance across departments. Shabnam Sahina of Chemistry received the best graduate award from the science stream, Preety Ghosh received the best graduate award from the science stream and Nishanta Das of Economics received the best graduate award from the Arts stream.

The Best Improver Awards were presented to students who demonstrated notable academic progress. The awardees included Banashree Deka from Assamese, Dipa Saha from Bengali, Sushmita Devi from Biotechnology, Bijit Thakuria from Botany, Trishna Kalita from Chemistry, Arpan Dutta from Commerce and Aminur Islam from Computer Science and Application. Deepankar Kulal of Economics, Dia Rani Paul of Education, Bhagyashree Kumari of English, Bipasha Boro of Geography, Bhaswati Sarma of History, Anupama Ghosh of Mathematics, Khushi Kumari of Philosophy, Rishiraj Kalita of Physics, Rengbijikat Enghipi of Political Science and Sunita Mallick of Zoology were also recognised for their academic improvement.

Hiya Chetia and Sangita Sarmah was felicitated for winning Gold at All India Inter University Woodball Championship representing Assam.

Cine Club Pandu College was awarded the best club. The Best Department award was won jointly by the Department of Economics and the Department of Physics. The best Grade III and IV employee was awarded to Mr. Bhabendra Kumar Nath and Mr. Suresh Boro respectively.

The event also marked the distribution of other awards such as Best Readers Award (Barnali Medhi, BA 5^th Semester, Department of Assamese), Winners of Essay Competition conducted by Pandujyoti, Nandita Choudhury Memorial Award, Dr, Anita Talukdar Award, Narendra Nath Barman Memorial Award and Beena Choudhury Memorial Award.

The celebration concluded with a formal vote of thanks, followed by lunch. The 65th Foundation Day provided an occasion for the Pandu College fraternity to reflect upon the institution’s rich legacy while reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility.
