Special Commissioner and Special Secretary to the Government of Assam, Shri Raj Chakraborty, Attends B.Tech Orientation Programme at Gauhati University Institute of Science and Technology

Guwahati, 17 August 2026: The B.Tech Orientation Programme 2026 for the newly admitted students of the Gauhati University Institute of Science and Technology (GUIST), Gauhati University, was held today. Shri Raj Chakraborty, Special Commissioner and Special Secretary to the Government of Assam, attended the programme as a distinguished guest and addressed the newly admitted students.

This year, a total of 100 students have been admitted to various B.Tech programmes at GUIST, including B.Tech in Biotechnology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The orientation programme was organised primarily to welcome the newly admitted students and familiarise them with the academic environment, facilities, resources and opportunities available at Gauhati University.

The programme was held at the auditorium of the Gauhati University Institute of Science and Technology in the presence of Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice-Chancellor, Gauhati University; Prof. Tulshi Bezboruah, Director i/c, GUIST; Prof. Shikhar Kumar Sarma, Dean, Faculty of Technology; Prof. Kandarpa Kumar Sarma, Controoler of Examination, Dr. Ranjan Kakati, Secretary University classes; Heads of various departments, university officials, invited guests, newly admitted B.Tech students and their parents.

The programme commenced at 9:30 a.m. with the Gauhati University Anthem, followed by the formal welcome of the guests, ceremonial lighting of the lamp and felicitation of the dignitaries. Prof. Tulshi Bezboruah, Director i/c, GUIST, delivered the welcome address, followed by the inaugural address by Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice-Chancellor, Gauhati University.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta elaborated on the glorious history of Gauhati University and its prestigious position in the field of higher education in the Northeast as well as in India. Recalling the University's journey of continuous effort, perseverance and pursuit of excellence since its establishment, he urged the newly admitted students to become worthy inheritors and contributors to this rich academic legacy.

The Vice-Chancellor also emphasised the multidisciplinary nature of the B.Tech programmes offered by Gauhati University. He highlighted that the programmes provide students with opportunities for integrated learning across disciplines, skill development, practical exposure, research and innovation, entrepreneurship and wider academic engagement. He noted that such an approach would enable students to develop a broader perspective and equip themselves to respond effectively to emerging challenges in technology and society.

In his address, Shri Raj Chakraborty, Special Commissioner and Special Secretary to the Government of Assam, emphasised the importance of acquiring knowledge from a multidisciplinary perspective. In simple and relatable terms, he connected his life experiences with the students' aspirations and encouraged them to pursue their dreams with determination. He stressed that human values, integrity and humility are essential qualities on the path to success. He urged the students to transform their dreams into clear goals, work persistently towards achieving them and, at the same time, preserve their human values and humility throughout their journey.

Prof. Shashi Barua, former Professor of Tezpur University and Founder Director of Vama Meditech, delivered an orientation lecture as a distinguished guest. Addressing the students, she emphasised that there is no substitute for hard work. She encouraged them to overcome their anxieties, fears and weaknesses and use challenges as the foundation for building success. She further urged the students to develop a strong understanding of the fundamentals of their respective disciplines, think deeply about problems and strive to find solutions to those problems for the benefit of humanity.

The programme also featured addresses by the Secretary of the University Classes and Director of Students’ Welfare; Dean, Faculty of Technology; Controller of Examinations; Chief Medical Officer; Librarian, Krishna Kanta Handiqui Library; and Heads of various departments and President of Post Graduate Student Union (PGSU). They familiarised the newly admitted students with the academic, administrative, healthcare, library, student welfare and other support facilities available at the University. The students were encouraged to make effective use of the multidisciplinary and National Education Policy (NEP)-aligned learning opportunities available to them and to begin their academic journey with confidence, purpose and a clear sense of direction.

The newly admitted students participated enthusiastically in the programme along with their parents. The interaction with university authorities, faculty members and distinguished guests provided the students with a comprehensive overview of the academic and professional opportunities available to them during their B.Tech journey. The programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. Debabrat Baishya and Dr. Jyoti Prakash Medhi, who coordinated the various activities of the orientation programme.
