Haflong, August 8: A cleanliness drive was organised along the Mahur River here on Saturday with a joint initiative of the Mahur Municipal Board and Baiglai Youth Club, Mahur, as part of an effort to protect and restore the river and its surroundings.
Members of Baiglai Youth Club, along with Chairman of the Mahur Municipal Board, Babul Kemprai, took part in the cleanliness drive. The participants cleaned the riverbank and highlighted the need for collective efforts to prevent the dumping of garbage and other waste into the river.
Speaking on the occasion, the organisers said that while a single day's drive may not be sufficient to clean the entire river, it marked an important beginning towards creating greater public awareness about environmental cleanliness and river conservation.
They appealed to the people of Mahur, particularly those residing along the riverbank, to refrain from throwing household garbage and other waste into the river. They stressed that keeping the river clean was essential not only for protecting the environment but also for safeguarding public health and ensuring a cleaner environment for future generations.
The organisers further urged citizens to change their habits and take collective responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of the river. They said the initiative would be meaningful only if the community continued such efforts beyond a single day.
The cleanliness drive was described as a first step towards building a cleaner, greener and healthier Mahur.
