Haflong United lift 2nd Sengya Tularam Trophy
Haflong, August 10: Haflong United emerged champions of the 2nd Sengya Tularam Trophy cricket tournament, defeating Dehangi Nayung in the final played at the Assam Cricket Stadium, Umrangso, on Sunday evening.
A total of 15 teams from different parts of Dima Hasao participated in the tournament, which was organised by the District Sports Office under the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC).
The winning team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, while the runners-up received Rs 1 lakh. The Player of the Tournament was presented with a Royal Enfield motorcycle.
The tournament has been organised in memory of Senapati Tularam, the last Army General of the Dimasa Kingdom, to commemorate his bravery, valour and legacy.
Speaking to the media, Herojit Jidung, Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) in charge of the Sports Department, said the tournament was aimed at providing a platform for budding cricketers of the district and helping them gain recognition at higher levels.
Jidung said the department would continue to support young sportspersons in disciplines including football, taekwondo, boxing and other sports, with the objective of providing them opportunities to compete at the state, national and international levels.
He further said that sports in the district had received a major boost under the initiative of DHAC Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa. Earlier, different sporting activities were conducted on a common platform, but dedicated infrastructure such as football grounds, cricket facilities and an indoor stadium was now helping sportspersons in the district pursue their disciplines more effectively.
The closing ceremony was attended by CEM Debolal Gorlosa, Executive Members Probita Johari and Donpainon Thaosen, other EMs and MACs, besides several dignitaries and sports enthusiasts.
