Guwahati, August 14, 2026: Gauhati University on Friday launched its Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), marking a significant step towards strengthening multidisciplinary and skill-oriented teacher education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor, GU while inaugurating the programme underlined the evolving role of teachers in a rapidly changing education landscape and emphasised that teaching beyond academic sphere.
“With changing times, the education system, teaching methods and the needs of learners have also evolved. However, it is important for a teacher to nurture a sense of responsibility, values, ethics, humanity and creative thinking while shaping future generations,” he said.
He further stressed the need for teachers to continuously upgrade their knowledge, skills and perspectives to remain relevant to the demands of future education.
The programme began with a welcome address by Prof. Purabi Baishya, Head, Department of Education.
Dr. Jayanta Kumar Sharma, Director, Adult & Non-Formal Education, Government of Assam and Member, ERC, NCTE, spoke on the relevance of ITEP in strengthening the teacher education ecosystem. He highlighted the programme’s potential to make teacher's preparation more integrated, contemporary and responsive to changing educational requirements.
The event was also attended by Dr. Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Secretary of the University Classes; Prof. Dulumoni Goswami, Chairperson, Integrated Teacher Education Programme; faculty members, parents and students.
The launch of ITEP at Gauhati University comes in line with the NEP 2020’s emphasis on multidisciplinary and holistic teacher preparation. The University intends to strengthen its contribution to teacher education in the region and create a new generation of educators equipped with knowledge, professional skills, values and contemporary pedagogical perspectives.
