Guwahati, August 10, 2026: Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, IPS, on Monday asked the new batch of students at Gauhati University to pursue their ambitions with discipline, confidence and a strong sense of responsibility, while encouraging them to strive not only for personal success but also to contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.
Addressing the Central Orientation Programme for the new cohort of students enrolled in the Five-Year Integrated Postgraduate Programme (FYIMP), the DGP said academic knowledge alone was not enough to achieve lasting success. “Success requires more than knowledge. It demands discipline, confidence, perseverance and responsibility. Set ambitious goals, embrace challenges and turn aspirations into action. The choices you make today will shape the person you become tomorrow. Strive not only for personal success but also to become responsible citizens who can make a meaningful difference to society and the nation,” he said.
Welcoming the new students, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta described Gauhati University as more than a centre of higher education, calling it a living part of Assam’s intellectual and cultural heritage. He encouraged the students to make full use of the academic, research and skill-development opportunities available at the University and contribute meaningfully to Assam and the nation.
“As one of the oldest centres of knowledge in the Northeast, Gauhati University carries the legacy and culture of Assam. We are hopeful that our students will carry forward the values and heritage of the University and make meaningful contributions to Assam and the nation,” Prof. Mahanta said.
Assam Gaurav Awardee, fitness trainer and adventure biker Meenakshi Das, who attended the programme as the Distinguished Guest, shared experiences from her own journey and encouraged students to pursue their goals with confidence, perseverance and determination.
The Central Orientation Programme marked the beginning of the academic journey of the new FYIMP cohort and provided students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the University’s academic environment, institutional values and opportunities.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Secretary of Classes.
Prof. Utpal Sarma, Registrar; Prof. Rajib Handique, Academic Registrar; Dr. Dhurjjati Sarma; Gunjan Deka, President, Post Graduate Students’ Union; Deans of various faculties, faculty members, parents and students were also present at the programme.
