Bangali Parishad Assam Condemns Violence in Meghalaya

 

Haflong, August 21: The Bangali Parishad Assam, Dima Hasao District Committee, has strongly condemned the violence, vandalism and attacks on innocent people reported during the Khasi Students’ Union agitation in Meghalaya on August 19.

In a statement, the organisation expressed particular concern over the alleged vandalism of statues of two revered national figures, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda, during the agitation.

The district committee said that no movement or protest should be allowed to turn violent and stressed that grievances and demands must be raised through peaceful and democratic means. It said the incidents have tarnished the values of a civilised society and created a disturbing situation in the state.

The organisation welcomed the Meghalaya administration’s reported action in connection with the incidents, saying prompt and stringent measures were necessary to maintain peace and uphold the rule of law.

The Bangali Parishad Assam, Dima Hasao District Committee, also appealed to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to ensure that all those involved in the violence of August 19 are identified and arrested without delay and that strict legal action is taken against them in accordance with the law.

The organisation further appealed to all sections of society, particularly student and youth organisations, to maintain peace and communal harmony and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in Meghalaya.
