Guwahati, 14th July, 2026:
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved another significant milestone in its journey towards modernization as three stations under its jurisdiction i.e. Majbat in Rangiya Division, Jalpaiguri Road in Alipurduar Division and Haldibari in Katihar Division have been redeveloped under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This marks a major step towards transforming railway stations into modern, accessible and passenger-friendly transport hubs while preserving the local heritage and cultural identity of each region. These three stations, located across Assam & West Bengal, have been comprehensively upgraded to provide enhanced passenger amenities and improved travel experience, in line with the Government of India’s vision of developing world-class railway infrastructure across the railways.
Under the Amrit Bharat
Station Scheme, Majbat railway station in Assam has been redeveloped at a cost
of Rs. 10.19 crore, Jalpaiguri Road railway station at Rs. 34.80 crore and
Haldibari railway station at approximately Rs. 26 crore. While each station has
been designed to reflect its regional character and operational requirements,
all three have been equipped with modern passenger-centric infrastructure,
including aesthetically upgraded station buildings, improved circulating areas,
spacious waiting halls, enhanced platform infrastructure, Foot Over Bridges
with lifts wherever provided, Divyangjan-friendly facilities, modern toilets,
advanced passenger information systems, improved illumination, landscaping and
other contemporary amenities. The comprehensive redevelopment is expected to
significantly enhance passenger convenience, strengthen regional connectivity,
promote tourism and contribute to the socio-economic development of the
surrounding areas.
The redevelopment of these stations under the Amrit Bharat Station
Scheme represents a significant step towards strengthening railway
infrastructure and enhancing the overall travel ecosystem across the NFR.
Beyond providing improved passenger facilities, the upgraded stations are
expected to act as engines of regional growth by boosting tourism, encouraging
local trade and commerce, creating new livelihood opportunities and showcasing
the unique cultural and architectural heritage of their respective regions.
Initiatives such as ‘One Station One Product’ will further promote indigenous
products and local artisans, while the modernized stations will serve as
vibrant public spaces that support sustainable development and improved
multimodal connectivity. Through these transformative projects, NFR continues
to contribute towards the vision of a modern, inclusive and future-ready Indian
Railways, delivering lasting benefits to passengers and the communities it
serves.
