Formalin Spill After Tanker Accident on NH-27: Public Advised Not to Use Jatinga River Water for Two Days


 Haflong, July 2: A tanker carrying formalin met with an accident at around 4:00 PM on Thursday on National Highway-27 near Jatinga Bridge, raising serious environmental and public health concerns.

According to official information, the tanker bearing registration number NL01AE3886 developed a leak after the accident, causing formalin to escape from two of its chambers. The hazardous chemical flowed into a nearby stream, which eventually joins the Jatinga River. 

The driver of the truck who was identified as Saiful Haque aged 36 a resident of Dalgaon in Chirag district was declared dead at Haflong Civil hospital.

Meanwhile DHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa a public  urged all residents living along the Jatinga River, from Jatinga Bridge to Harangajao, not to use river water for the next two days. The restriction applies to all purposes, including drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, irrigation, and providing water to livestock or other animals.

Officials stated that the precautionary measure has been taken to safeguard the health of local residents, livestock, aquatic life, and the surrounding ecosystem, as formalin is a hazardous chemical that can pose serious health risks upon exposure.

 Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further updates are expected after an assessment of the contamination level in the river.
