Public Toilet in Umrangso Falls into Neglect Despite Service Charges
Haflong, June 26: The only public toilet in Umrangso township, constructed under the Assam Vikash Yojona scheme during 2009–2010 and implemented by the Umrangso Town Committee, has fallen into a dilapidated state. This comes at a time when the government is pressing for cleanliness and sanitation under its flagship initiatives.
Located at the heart of Umrangso, which has emerged as a bustling tourist hotspot in Dima Hasao, the facility was meant to serve the growing needs of residents and visitors. However, lack of maintenance has left the toilet unhygienic, raising concerns among locals and tourists alike.
For years, citizens have voiced demands for proper sanitation in the Umrangso market area, but the issue remains unresolved. Despite collecting service charges of ₹10 and ₹20 from users, the authorities have failed to ensure cleanliness and upkeep of the facility.
Residents argue that the neglect of this vital public utility undermines the government’s cleanliness drive and sends a poor message to visitors. With Umrangso’s tourism potential on the rise, citizens are urging the Town Committee to take immediate steps to restore and maintain the toilet, ensuring that basic sanitation needs are met in the township’s busiest hub.
