NFR Introduces IoT-Based Tunnel Lighting Automation for Efficient Energy Utilization
Guwahati, 29th June, 2026:
In a significant step towards enhancing
energy efficiency and adopting smart technologies, Northeast Frontier Railway
(NFR) has implemented an advanced IoT-based tunnel lighting automation and
energy monitoring system for Tunnel No. 9 at New Haflong in the Lumding –
Badarpur Hill Section. The initiative enables centralized supervision, remote
operation and real-time energy monitoring through the IR Niyantrac platform,
marking another milestone in NFR’s efforts to modernize railway infrastructure
and optimize energy consumption.
As part of the project, smart
metering infrastructure has been installed for tunnel lighting feeders and
field devices have been successfully integrated with the IR Niyantrac platform.
The system facilitates remote operation and monitoring of Tunnel No. 9 lighting
installations, while providing live data on energy consumption and operational
status. The automation ensures efficient utilization of energy by enabling
timely control and continuous monitoring of lighting systems. By enabling
real-time monitoring of power consumption and system performance, the
initiative will help optimize energy usage, reduce wastage and promote
sustainable practices.
The implementation of the
IoT-based tunnel lighting automation system is part of NFR’s ongoing efforts to
modernize its infrastructure and strengthen energy management across the
network. Through such initiatives, Northeast Frontier Railway continues to reinforce
its commitment to operational excellence, environmental sustainability and the
creation of modern railway infrastructure, in line with Indian Railways vision
of a smarter and greener future.
