Gauhati University addresses student concerns through Facebook Live, counters misinformation on FYUGP and related issues

Guwahati, June 5, 2026: In a proactive effort to address growing confusion among students arising from misinformation and rumours circulating on social media, senior officials of Gauhati University on Friday hosted a Facebook Live session to provide clarity on the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) and other academic matters.

The session, which lasted for over an hour, featured Prof. Utpal Sarma, Registrar; Prof. Rajiv Handique, Academic Registrar; Dr. Sanjay Kumar Dutta, OSD to the Vice Chancellor; and Dr. Akashdeep Goswami, Dy Controller of Examinations. During the interaction, the officials addressed hundreds of student queries and clarified concerns related to academic programmes, examinations, results, and institutional policies.

“This initiative reflects the University’s firm commitment to counter misinformation and ensure that students receive accurate information directly from official sources,” said Prof. Sarma, Registrar.

“We have observed a significant increase in the misuse of social media platforms by vested interests to spread misleading information regarding FYUGP, the alleged discontinuation of courses and departments, examination-related matters, and other academic issues. This Facebook Live session was conceived as a transparent and direct platform to engage with students, address their concerns, and provide factual clarifications,” he added.

In recent weeks, a series of rumours concerning FYUGP, FYIMP, examination results, and the status of various courses and departments prompted the University to intervene and communicate directly with students.

Although the session was primarily organised to address concerns related to FYUGP, students raised a wide range of questions on several academic issues. University officials welcomed the overwhelming response from the student community, with the session recording nearly 500 live participants at its peak.

The discussion covered topics including the advantages of a four-year undergraduate degree over a three-year programme, the distinction between Honours and Honours with Research, eligibility criteria for pursuing Honours with Research, eligibility of Honours with Research graduates for PhD admissions, the process for colleges seeking approval to offer the fourth year of study, and several other issues related to the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP).

The University officials informed students that they may continue to submit their queries through Gauhati University’s official social media channels. It also announced plans to introduce a dedicated helpline email address to facilitate the submission of concerns and ensure timely clarifications.

Addressing concerns related to examinations and results, University officials stated that pending results are expected to be declared within the next 30 days.

Gauhati University also urged students to embrace the opportunities presented by the National Education Policy. While acknowledging that any major academic transition may naturally lead to questions and apprehensions, the University expressed confidence that sustained engagement and cooperation between students, affiliated colleges, and the University administration would ensure the successful implementation of the NEP and the long-term enhancement of higher education standards in the region.
