Gauhati University Gets AICTE Nod to Start New Integrated M.Tech. Programmes


Guwahati, 22 May: Gauhati University has received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to start two new Five-Year Integrated M.Tech. Programmes in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Information Technology (IT) from the academic session 2026–27. The approval has been granted through AICTE Letter of Approval issued to Gauhati University indicating approved intakes per year as 40 for each of the Programmes. AICTE has also approved admission of Foreign students in these programmes. 

The newly approved programmes will be offered in the Department of Information Technology, Gauhati University, and are designed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These programmes will fulfil the contemporary requirements of AI-driven technological education. As per the approved structure, students admitted into the Integrated M.Tech. programmes will receive a B.Tech. degree after successful completion of four years and an M.Tech. degree after completion of the fifth year. Both the programmes will also have provisions for Honours in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI-ML) and Data Science, opening new avenues for local aspiring students.  

The programmes are unique in nature as students admitted in the first year will automatically progress to the M.Tech. phase without requiring any additional entrance examination. 

Admissions will be conducted based on JEE and Assam CEE (Assam) scores, and the first phase of application submission has already started through gauhatiadmission.samarth.edu.in. For each programme, seats will be distributed between JEE-qualified and CEE-qualified candidates. Gauhati University has also announced provisions for reservation of seats as per Government and University rules.

Speaking on the development, university officials stated that the introduction of these AICTE-approved Integrated M.Tech. programmes marks a significant milestone in strengthening advanced technological education and contemporary AI-oriented Technology studies in Assam and the North Eastern region. Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta said-“The initiative is also expected to support the growing demand for skilled technical professionals and researchers in next-generation digital technologies, thereby contributing to the technological and innovation ecosystem of the region.”

 He reiterated GU’s continued commitment to bring contemporary education and research in emerging fields of studies to the local students. Prof. Shikhar Kumar Sarma, Dean Faculty of Technology, and Head of the Department of Information Technology appealed to local aspiring students to take benefit of these Integrated Masters programme at GU. He also said-“The curriculum is designed to create strong academic and research opportunities in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Natural Language Processing, Cyber Security, IoT, Image and Health Informatics, and Intelligent Computing”.
