Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Records Impressive Growth in FY 2025–26


 

Guwahati, 08th April, 2026:

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is pleased to report a significant increase in passenger traffic and revenue of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) for the financial year 2025–26. Recognised globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the DHR holds a unique place among India’s historic mountain railways. The iconic “Heritage Train” continues to attract tourists and railway enthusiasts from across the world with its breathtaking scenic beauty, rich legacy and distinctive travel experience. Recent passenger friendly initiatives, improved services and tourism focused efforts have further enhanced its appeal, strengthening its position as one of the most cherished and sought after heritage rail journeys.

In FY 2025–26, passenger footfall increased to 2.15 lakh, while earnings rose to over Rs. 25 crore. This represents a growth of approximately 17.72% in passenger traffic and 14.71% in revenue over the previous year, highlighting the growing popularity and sustained demand for the iconic “Heritage Train” while also contributing significantly to local employment and tourism-driven economic growth in the Darjeeling region.

The impressive growth has been achieved through a multi-pronged approach adopted by NFR, focusing on enhancing passenger experience while preserving the historic charm of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Key initiatives include curated tourism experiences, tailored services, strengthened stakeholder engagement and continuous improvements in infrastructure and passenger comfort. The rising patronage of the DHR is contributing significantly to the local economy by supporting livelihoods and promoting tourism across the Darjeeling hills. 

The performance of FY 2025–26 reaffirms the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s status as one of India’s most treasured railway legacies and a symbol of rich cultural and engineering heritage. NFR remains committed to preserving this iconic marvel for future generations.
