Haflong, March 15: The Bhumi Pujan ceremony for the Haflong Town Water Supply Project under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 was held on Sunday at Lal Field in Haflong. The programme was organised by the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of Assam, marking an important step toward strengthening the town’s water supply infrastructure and ensuring safe drinking water for residents.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Member of NCHAC Donpainon Thaosen highlighted the long-standing problem of water scarcity in Haflong. Recalling his own experiences during earlier years in the town, he said that the project is expected to provide a lasting solution to the water crisis faced by residents.
“Water scarcity has been a persistent issue for the people of Haflong. I believe this project will finally address the problem,” Thaosen said. Despite heavy rain, the programme continued smoothly.
Mission Director of AMRUT Samprity Goswami informed that the project is estimated to cost around ₹100 crore and will have the capacity to generate about 7 million litres of water per day, significantly improving the town’s water supply.
The Haflong Town Water Supply Project has been designed to benefit around 10,086 households through House Service Connections (HSCs), ensuring round-the-clock access to safe drinking water.
Under the project, water will be sourced from surface sources and treated through a Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 7.0 MLD. For effective distribution, a pipeline network of about 70.25 kilometres will be laid across the town.
The programme was attended by several dignitaries including Executive Member NCHAC Probita Johori, MAC Pronath Rajiyung, Principal Secretary Partha Jahari, Chairman of Haflong Municipal Board Ripa Hojai, Joint Secretary NCHAC Rebecca Changsan, along with heads of various departments and other officials.
