Tragic Train Accident Claims Life Near Maibang Railway Station

Haflong, December 1: Dinendra Thaosen (54), from Hajadisa village under Maibang Police Station in Assam's Dima Hasao district, died after a train struck him while crossing tracks near Maibang Railway Station on December 1, 2025. He leaves behind his wife, three sons, and four daughters. This marks at least the fourth fatal incident at the site, underscoring persistent pedestrian safety hazards amid heavy rail traffic.

Maibang, historic capital of the Dimasa kingdom, has seen repeated calls from residents for a foot overbridge to enable safe crossings. Frontal groups like the All Dimasa Students' Union (ADSU) and locals have pressed Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authorities for action, pointing to prior run-over deaths due to lacking infrastructure.

While NFR promotes tourism through Vistadome services, it has not addressed these safety demands despite emphasizing punctuality and security. Locals face daily risks navigating busy tracks with no secure alternative, a problem worsened by unreported past fatalities.

ADSU leader Mairing Johori voiced grave concern to media, warning of intense protests, railway blockades, and FIRs if authorities fail to act swiftly on preventive steps like a foot overbridge.
