Guwahati| November 7: In a significant step towards integrating academic learning with real-world crisis preparedness, Gauhati University on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) for the introduction of a 'Disaster Management Communication Course'—the first of its kind in the region.
The MoU was formalised during the event “Building Collaborative Resilience for the Future” held in Guwahati. The new course aims to build professional capacities in disaster communication, equipping students and practitioners with the skills to respond effectively during emergencies through accurate information, coordination, and public engagement.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University, said, “This partnership marks a vital moment in higher education and disaster preparedness in Assam. Communication is not just about sharing information—it’s about saving lives during crises. By introducing this course, Gauhati University is reaffirming its social responsibility to create informed communicators who can serve people in times of need.”
The collaboration will blend academic research with field-level application, enabling participants to understand disaster communication through a multidisciplinary lens. The initiative also reflects ASDMA’s focus on knowledge-driven strategies to enhance disaster resilience across the state.
Dr Chandan Kumar Goswami, Head of the Department of Communication and Journalism, said, “Our department has always believed in using communication for public good. This partnership with ASDMA will open new academic and professional opportunities for students while strengthening Assam’s ability to manage and communicate during crises with clarity and compassion.”
