GU NSS Cell Marks Sardar Patel’s 150th Birth Anniversary with Tree Plantation Drive

Guwahati, 15 November: Joining the nationwide celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Gauhati University NSS Cell organised a meaningful and environmentally focused programme to honour the legacy of the Iron Man of India. To commemorate the occasion, a large-scale tree plantation drive was carried out along the banks of the Kalamoni River at Thakuria Para Village, Azara.

The event was formally inaugurated by Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kakati, Director of Students’ Welfare and NSS Programme Co-ordinator of Gauhati University. Dr. Kakati initiated the programme by planting a Nahor sapling, symbolising growth, harmony, and ecological responsibility. In his inaugural address, he emphasised the pressing need for afforestation to combat the rising threat of global warming. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening environmental awareness among citizens, especially the younger generation.

Following the inauguration, enthusiastic NSS volunteers from the Gauhati University campus actively participated in the plantation drive, planting over one hundred saplings across the designated area. Their collective effort aimed not only to honour Sardar Patel’s unparalleled contribution to national integration but also to contribute positively to environmental conservation.

The plantation drive served as a reminder of Patel’s vision of unity, responsibility, and nation-building. By integrating social responsibility with ecological action, the GU NSS Cell succeeded in marking the day with a thoughtful and impactful initiative. The programme concluded with a renewed commitment from volunteers and coordinators to continue working towards creating a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable environment for future generations.
