ASCPCR and DIN Organise Media Interface in Guwahati to Promote Responsible Child-Centric Reporting
Guwahati 22nd November: Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Dream India Network in collaboration with Cotton University, Department of Mass Communication had organised a “Media Interface: Responsible Reporting by Media on Children Related Issues” observing the “Child Rights Week” in Assam
The Media Interface aimed to bring together journalists, editors and media professionals from across Kamrup Metropolitan, Assam focusing on ethical media reporting of children, strengthening existing child reporting standards and guidelines. With increasing cases of vulnerability and portrayal of information which often violate child rights, the program sensitizes and intervenes the media houses for various guidelines and responsible reporting on child related cases including POCSO, Child Labour, Child Marriage, Violence against children and Trafficking etc.
Dr. Shyamal Prasad Saikia, IPS (Retd.), Chairperson of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered his concluding speech on ‘Role of Media in Publishing News Item on Atrocities Against Children’. The other notable Dignitaries who graced the occasion and delivered individual speeches on the same were - Mrs. Durba Ghosh, Head of Northeast, PTI, Mrs. Rilanjana Talukdar, Member, ASCPCR, Mr. Laxminarayan Nanda – Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF and Dr. Sayanika Deka – Head of Department, Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, Cotton University and Shri Nirmal Deka, Deputy Programme Manager of Utsav (NGO). Professionals from leading media houses – Print, Electronic and Digital media of Guwahati have also actively participated.
Dream India Network (DIN) has pledged to continue to support the media houses with such interactions and training programs in collaboration with local government bodies and assist them in responsible reporting on Child Rights issues and contribute in making Guwahati a Child Friendly City.
