NFR Marks Gandhi Jayanti with Solemn Observance, Launches Swachhata Special Campaign 5.0

Guwahati, 02nd October, 2025: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) observed the 156th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today with reverence and solemnity. Shri Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager, led the observance by lighting the ceremonial lamp and offering floral tribute to the Father of the Nation at the NFR Headquarters Complex. Shri Arun Kumar Chaudhary, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (Construction), also paid floral tribute at Nirman Vatika, adjacent to the office complex of the General Manager (Construction), Maligaon.

According to an official statement given by Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer, the programme witnessed the participation of senior officials and staff across locations who collectively remembered Mahatma Gandhi’s values and teachings. The occasion reaffirmed NFR’s commitment to Gandhiji’s ideals of truth, non-violence, cleanliness and selfless service to society. A tree plantation drive was also undertaken at Maligaon, where the General Manager, NFR, and General Manager (Construction), along with other senior officials, planted saplings to mark the occasion.

As part of Swachhata Hi Seva 2025, NFR also launched a notable green initiative on Gandhi Jayanti. Passengers of 29 Mail/Express trains originating today from stations such as Naharlagun, Agartala, Silchar, Kishanganj, Alipurduar and Guwahati were provided compostable bedroll bags manufactured by IIT Guwahati. This builds upon the earlier initiative launched from 17th September, 2025, covering 26 Mail/Express trains. Unlike conventional plastic, these eco-friendly, non-toxic bags are made from renewable resources, decompose naturally without leaving harmful residues, aid waste segregation and composting, and help reduce single-use plastic pollution. The project has been sponsored by the State Bank of India under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), making it a Net Zero cost initiative for NFR. This effort underscores NFR’s ongoing commitment to promoting a cleaner and greener environment.

In addition, the Ministry of Railways today launched Special Campaign 5.0, to be conducted from 02nd to 31st October, 2025, as a focused initiative to institutionalize Swachhata across all Government offices, including Indian Railways. The campaign emphasizes scrap disposal for revenue generation, e-waste management, space optimization, e-file review and weeding, and timely grievance redressal. Key focus areas also include waste-to-wealth projects and adoption of effective e-office practices. Cleanliness drives will be carried out alongside citizen-centric Amrit Samwad programmes at major stations, including 105 Amrit Bharat Stations, to raise awareness and encourage public participation.

Through these initiatives, NFR seeks to inspire sustainable practices in railway operations while aligning with the nationwide movement for environmental preservation.
