New Panbazar Road Overbridge to Be Inaugurated by Assam CM Tomorrow
Guwahati, 26th September, 2025: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced the inauguration of the newly built Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Panbazar, Guwahati, on 27th September, 2025. The inauguration will be graced by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, in the presence of state dignitaries, the General Manager of NFR, and senior officials from both the Railways and the State Government.
According to an official statement given by Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer, the new ROB spans 290 metres and is constructed at a cost of ₹47 crore, and includes a wide carriageway along with 1.5-metre footpaths on either side. The structure incorporates advanced engineering elements such as a 60-metre Bow String Girder and composite girders, designed to ensure enhanced vertical and horizontal clearances. These features will enable the smooth passage of trains, including electric locomotives and over-dimensional consignments, while significantly easing traffic congestion along the bustling Panbazar–Paltan Bazar corridor of Guwahati.
The original Panbazar ROB, built in 1965, had served the city for nearly sixty years but was no longer adequate. Its narrow width, insufficient clearance, and frequent waterlogging had led to severe traffic bottlenecks and disrupted electrified train movement. To overcome these limitations and cater to the increasing transport demands of Assam’s capital, NFR launched the replacement project in March 2024. Despite the challenges of dismantling and modern reconstruction, the project was completed in just 18 months, reaching completion in August 2025.
With its commissioning, Guwahati now receives a critical infrastructure upgrade that promises safer, faster, and more dependable connectivity. The new Panbazar ROB is expected to benefit citizens and road users, facilitate smoother train operations, support the re-modelling of Guwahati Railway Station, and strengthen multimodal transport links. This milestone achievement stands as a reflection of NFR’s dedication to enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth across Assam and the Northeast.
