N. F. Railway to restore Line No. 2 at New Harangajao station by 5th September

 Guwahati, 01^st September, 2026:

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved encouraging progress in the restoration work at New Harangajao station, with Line No. 2 expected to be restored by 5^th September 2026. Around 500 personnel are working round the clock at the site to expedite the restoration process and ensure early resumption of normal train operations. To support the intensive restoration efforts, 22 PC excavators, 12 JCBs, 18 tractors, along with specialised machinery including pneumatic drills and hydraulic piling rigs, have been deployed. Teams are working continuously on strengthening the affected section, stabilising the track infrastructure and completing other essential restoration activities, while maintaining the highest priority for passenger safety.

Since 20^th July 2026, the New Harangajao yard has been experiencing continuous settlement and lateral shifting of the railway formation, affecting normal train operations. As a precautionary measure and in the interest of passenger safety, train movement has been restricted to Line No. 3. The situation has been attributed to a shift in the natural watercourse and changes in the local drainage pattern, resulting in a heavy and concentrated inflow of water from the upstream hillside. The accumulation of water beneath the ground has led to deep sub-surface water build-up, affecting the stability of the railway formation. Northeast Frontier Railway has undertaken intensive restoration and strengthening measures, including drainage management, dewatering and stabilisation of the affected formation, to restore the affected lines at the earliest while ensuring safe train operations.

 

At present, train operations through Line No. 3 are continuing with enhanced safety measures to ensure safe and reliable movement of trains. Restoration of Line No. 2, expected by 5^th September 2026, will enable NFR to operate more trains through the section within a short period. Further, Line No. 1 is expected to be restored by the end of September 2026.

Northeast Frontier Railway remains fully committed to completing the restoration works at the earliest, with passenger safety as its foremost priority. All necessary resources, manpower and machinery are being deployed to expedite the works and restore normal train operations through the Lumding – Badarpur Hill Section at the earliest.
