Haflong, August 10: Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner Gayatri Devidas Hyalinge, IAS, and Superintendent of Police Ripunjoy Kakati on Monday visited Saron village under Mahur police station to assess the damage caused by landslides triggered by incessant heavy rainfall in the district.
The officials, accompanied by the Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge of Disaster Management, visited the affected areas and took stock of the condition of residential houses, roads and other vulnerable locations. They also interacted with local residents and gathered information about the extent of damage caused by the landslides.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner spoke to the affected families and heard their grievances. As the possibility of further landslides remains high in the wake of continued rainfall, the administration assured the villagers that the situation was being closely monitored.
As an immediate relief measure, the district administration distributed tarpaulins among the affected families to provide temporary protection to damaged houses and shelter from the rain. The assistance brought some relief to the affected residents.
The district administration said that ensuring timely delivery of relief materials and essential assistance to people affected by natural calamities remains a priority. Further relief measures will be undertaken based on the prevailing situation and assessment of the damage.
The visit comes amid continued heavy rainfall in several hilly areas of Dima Hasao, which has triggered landslides at a number of locations. Saron village in Mahur has also been affected, with saturated soil and weakened hill slopes increasing the risk of further landslides.
The administration and police authorities have stepped up monitoring and precautionary measures in vulnerable areas. The joint field visit by senior officials was seen as an important step towards assessing the ground situation and ensuring prompt assistance to people affected by the natural calamity.
