Guwahati, July 1: The Red Ribbon Club (RRC) of Pandu College successfully concluded the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADIT), 2026 with a grand valedictory programme held on June 30 at the Karmashree Hiteswar Saikia Auditorium, Baripara, Pandu, Guwahati. The day-long event marked the culmination of a series of awareness initiatives undertaken by the college to promote a drug-free society and encourage informed, responsible choices among young people.
The open session was graced by Dr. Mridul Bharati Nath, District AIDS Control Officer, Kamrup (Metro); Dr. Sondeep Hanse, Chief Functionary, State Level Coordination Agency (SLCA), Drug Abuse Prevention for Assam and Meghalaya, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), Government of India; and Sri Pallav Hazarika, Assistant Director, Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS). The dignitaries delivered inspiring and informative speeches highlighting the growing threat of substance abuse and the importance of awareness, prevention and community participation in combating the menace.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Sanchay Jyoti Bora, Principal, Pandu College. Ms. Daisy Deka anchored the open session, while Sri Mridul Pratima Sarma delivered the vote of thanks.
International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed across the world on June 26 every year. This year, the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) selected ten educational institutions across Assam to observe the occasion. Among them, the Red Ribbon Club of Pandu College, representing Kamrup (Metro) district, was entrusted with organising the programme.
Accordingly, the college organised a series of awareness activities, including an awareness meeting, poster and leaflet distribution among students, and an anti-drug pledge to sensitise young people about the harmful effects of drug abuse. These programmes were conducted by Dr. Shantanu Roy Chowdhury, Programme Coordinator, Red Ribbon Club, Pandu College, under the presidentship of Dr. Sanchay Jyoti Bora, Principal, Pandu College. Faculty members Dr. Dipanjali Haloi, Dr. Karishma Shravan, Ms. Nirmali Sarma Bhattacharya and Md. Ayez Uddin were also present.
As part of the valedictory celebrations, several competitions were organised to encourage student participation and spread anti-drug awareness. The competitions were conducted in two categories: Group A for students from Classes VIII to XII and Group B for Degree and Postgraduate students.
The Essay Competition was based on the theme "Drug Abuse: Causes, Impacts and Strategies for Prevention and Recovery." The Poster and Slogan Competitions focused on the themes "Say No to Drug Abuse: Educating Adolescents on Substance Awareness" and "The Consequences of Drug Abuse." The Reel Making Competition centred on "The Observance of IDADIT 2026 organised by RRC, Pandu College."
The results of the competitions were announced during the prize distribution ceremony.
In the Slogan Competition, Group A winners were Moumita Sarkar of Vidya Niketan High School (1st) and Siya Paul, also from Vidya Niketan High School (2nd). In Group B, Jasashree Bordoloi of Dispur College secured the first position, followed by Snehashish Chakraborty of Pandu College in second place and Yesmin Begum of Dispur College in third place.
In the Poster Competition, Group A winners were Momita Majumder, Dipali Das and Payel Barman, all from Vidya Niketan High School, securing the first, second and third positions respectively. In Group B, Nayana Kalita of Dispur College won first prize, while Susmita Rajbongshi and Nikita Das, both from Pandu College, secured the second and third positions.
In the Essay Competition, Group A saw Moumita Sarkar of Vidya Niketan High School winning first prize, while Tarpita Ghosh, also from the same institution, secured second place. In Group B, Satarupa Choudhury of LCB College emerged as the winner, followed by Nisha Jaiswal of West Guwahati Commerce College in second place and Momi Barman of Radha Govinda Barua College in third place.
In the Reel Making Competition, Farhad Jene Afrida, Akshita Das and Jasmina Khatun, all from Dispur College, secured the first, second and third positions respectively in Group A. In Group B, Biswa Mallick of Pandu College won the first prize.
The Quiz Competition title was won by LCB College, represented by Satarupa Choudhury, Dipak Prasad Sah and Rakibul Islam. The first runners-up were Pandu College, represented by Alisha Das, Jumi Das and Nikita Das, while another Pandu College team comprising Rishi Raj Kalita, Snehashish Chakraborty and Hiya Das finished as the third runners-up.
Following the open session and prize distribution ceremony, the audience was treated to a colourful cultural programme presented by the participants, bringing the day-long celebration to a vibrant conclusion.
The entire programme was conducted by Dr. Shantanu Roy Chowdhury, Programme Coordinator of the Red Ribbon Club, Pandu College, whose efforts, along with the support of ASACS, faculty members and participating institutions, ensured the successful observance of IDADIT 2026 while reinforcing the message of a drug-free and healthy society.
