Inauguration of the Young Indians Parliament: Education Minister Inaugurates the Event

Guwahati, 7 July: Organized with the objective of developing a practical understanding of the democratic system of governance, the Young Indians Parliament was successfully inaugurated yesterday at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati. The two-day program, jointly organized under the auspices of Young Indians, Guwahati Chapter, and the Assam State School Education Board, was inaugurated by Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu.

Addressing the inaugural session, the Education Minister stated that education is not just limited to textbooks and classrooms. He emphasized that real learning comes through participation, discussion, dialogue, and practical experience. According to him, initiatives like the Young Indians Parliament provide students with the opportunity to understand democratic values and responsibilities closely.

This not only helps them develop an understanding of parliamentary procedures but also sheds light on how governments are formed and decisions are made. Expressing happiness over the enthusiastic participation of students from all 33 districts of Assam, Pegu remarked that this program is an excellent example of the true representation of the state's diverse youth.

The program commenced with the oath-taking ceremony of the student Members of Parliament (MPs), followed by the formation of various political parties and the process of government formation. Afterward, following the democratic process, the participants elected various constitutional and parliamentary roles, including the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Leader of the House, Leader of the Opposition, and Ministers, giving them a vivid, real-life experience of parliamentary proceedings.

Students also presented the manifestos of their respective parties, outlining their vision, priorities, and policy resolutions in detail. Following this, they actively participated in various parliamentary debates, legislative processes, and house proceedings, thereby gaining a close understanding of the functioning of a democratic layout.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, R.C. Jain, the retired IAS officer and Chairman of the Assam State School Education Board, stated that the Young Indians Parliament provides students with a safe, positive, and motivating environment. Here, they can express their thoughts openly without hesitation or fear of making mistakes, engage in meaningful discussions, and carry forward their learning process with confidence.

Elaborating on the broader objectives of the program, Mehul Pasari from the Young Indians Guwahati Chapter said that through this comprehensive parliamentary simulation, students gain practical experience in: Legislative processes, Democratic governance, Public policy-making, Leadership skills, Teamwork, Critical thinking and Effective communication skills
