Gauhati University Celebrates Van Mahotsav 2026 with Plantation Drive at Dondoral, Assam–Meghalaya Border



Guwahati, 7 July 2026: The Gauhati University NSS Cell, in association with Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya, successfully observed Van Mahotsav 2026 from 1st to 7th July 2026 with the objective of promoting environmental conservation and creating awareness about the importance of afforestation.

The week-long programme was formally inaugurated by Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice-Chancellor, Gauhati University who planted a sapling at the Gauhati University campus, symbolising the University's commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological conservation.

As part of the celebrations, a plantation drive was organised at Dondoral, located on the Assam–Meghalaya border at Sunapur . The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from NSS volunteers and local residents who joined hands to plant saplings and spread the message of environmental protection.

Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kakati, Secretary, University Classes, Gauhati University, led the team of NSS volunteers to Dondoral and encouraged them to actively contribute towards protecting and restoring the natural environment. He emphasised that tree plantation is a collective responsibility and called upon the youth to become ambassadors of sustainable development.

The programme was also accompanied by Dr. Lakhimi Gogoi, NSS PO NAM, and Dr. Sashi Prava Devi, NSS PO,GU Campus NSS Unit. Around 40 Volunteers from Narengi Anchalik and GU campus attended the program.
