Guwahati, 13th June: Swagat Super Speciality Hospital and Surgical Institute has continued its remarkable success in the field of liver transplantation by successfully performing yet another Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT) on 27th May 2026, further strengthening its position as the leading liver transplant centre in Northeast India. The hospital is presently the only centre in the region performing liver transplant surgeries on a regular basis and at affordable rates, enabling patients from Assam and neighbouring states to access advanced transplant care closer to home.
Earlier this year, on 4th April
2026, the hospital had successfully performed a liver transplant on Md. Asgar
Ali (52 years), with his 20-year-old son, Mr. Enjamul Hoque, serving as the
donor. Encouraged by the excellent outcome of that transplant, the hospital
successfully completed another liver transplant on 27th May 2026, where the
recipient was Mr. Manmath Kalita (60 years) and the donor was his 25-year-old
son, Mr. Dhruba Jyoti Das.
The highly complex transplant
surgeries were successfully carried out by the dedicated multidisciplinary
transplant team at the institute. Hospital management informed that both
recipients and donors recovered well following their surgeries and have since
been discharged from the hospital. All are presently recuperating comfortably
at home.
Addressing the media, the
management of Swagat Super Speciality Hospital and Surgical Institute announced
that the transplant programme is led by Prof. Dr. Subhash Khanna as Team
In-Charge. Notably, the first recipient, Md. Asgar Ali, had been admitted on
multiple occasions in a critical condition and had undergone several lifesaving
procedures including banding, Sengstaken tube insertion and BRTO before
eventually receiving a successful liver transplant.
Gastroenterology support was led
by Dr. Amitava Goswami, while the surgical transplant team included Dr. Vikash
Moond, Senior Consultant Liver Transplant Surgeon; Dr. Ashish George, Principal
Consultant & Unit Head – Liver Transplant
; along with other surgeons Dr.
Areendam Barua; Dr. Supriya Choudhury; Dr. Biswajyoti Rabha, Dr. Rishiraj
Brahma; Dr. Daniel Raju; and Dr. Pavan Bhargav.
The transplant anaesthesia team
comprised of Dr. Sherin S. Rasalam, Consultant Liver Transplant Anaesthetist;
Dr. Kaneenika Das; and Dr. Shabbir Khan, while intensive care support was
provided by Dr. Ayushman Khanna and his team.
Senior consultants from the
departments of Cardiology, Radiology, Pathology and Psychiatry were also
actively involved in the comprehensive care of the patients. Dedicated
transplant coordinators, duty officers, nursing staff and ICU teams were
specially assigned for the surgeries, while strict transplant protocols and
patient safety measures were maintained throughout the procedures.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof.
Dr. Subhash Khanna said:
"The successful completion
of consecutive liver transplants is a matter of immense pride for our
institution and for the entire Northeast region. Our vision is to establish a
sustainable and affordable liver transplant programme so that patients no longer
need to travel to distant metropolitan cities for treatment. These successful
outcomes demonstrate that world-class transplant care can now be delivered
within Assam at costs significantly lower than many centres across the
country."
He further added that the
institute is continuously strengthening its transplant programme and
infrastructure to provide advanced and affordable healthcare services within
the region.
Dr. Ayushman Khanna stated that
the institution remains committed to providing affordable treatment options for
patients suffering from liver failure and other advanced liver diseases. He
further added that with growing expertise and infrastructure, the hospital
expects to attract patients not only from Northeast India but also from
neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal, where
access to liver transplant facilities remains limited.
The hospital management also
announced that a dedicated monthly Liver Clinic is being conducted at Swagat
Hospitals by Dr. Vikash Moond, Senior Consultant Liver Transplant Surgeon,
enabling patients requiring consultation for liver diseases and transplant
evaluation to access specialized care within the region.
With successful liver transplants
now being performed on a regular basis, Swagat Super Speciality Hospital and
Surgical Institute continues to reinforce Assam's emergence as a major Healthcare
and medical tourism destination for tertiary and transplant healthcare services
in Northeast India.
