Haflong, May 21: Concerns and dissatisfaction are mounting among passengers and local residents over the incomplete modernisation work at New Haflong Railway Station, which was selected under the Indian Railways’ ambitious Indian Railways “Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.”
Although the project was officially announced in late 2022 and development works at various stations began in phases from 2023, passengers allege that the modernisation work at New Haflong Railway Station remains unfinished even after nearly three years.
Particular dissatisfaction has emerged over the station’s newly constructed waiting hall. Passengers have questioned whether the construction work has actually been completed. They also raised concerns over why expensive furniture and facilities were opened for public use before the completion of the remaining work.
According to passengers, the waiting hall still has no doors installed, creating serious security concerns for travellers waiting for trains at night. They fear that the open access may allow misuse or damage to government property and costly furniture, raising questions over maintenance and security arrangements.
Passengers further complained about unhygienic conditions inside the waiting hall, alleging a heavy presence of flies throughout the area. For the large hall, only five small ceiling fans have been installed, of which two have reportedly remained non-functional for a long period. As a result, travellers are facing considerable discomfort in the hot and unhealthy environment.
Local residents and railway users alleged that inadequate planning and poor maintenance of public infrastructure built with taxpayers’ money amount to wastage of public funds and neglect of common citizens.
With the modernisation work still incomplete after three years, resentment among passengers continues to grow. Local people and railway travellers have urged the Northeast Frontier Railway authorities to immediately complete the remaining modernisation work at New Haflong Railway Station.
