Gauhati University hosts first Kaliram Medhi Memorial Lecture

Guwahati, January 28, 2026: Gauhati University on Wednesday organised the first annual Kaliram Medhi Memorial Lecture at the Phanidhar Datta Auditorium, inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, with the keynote address delivered by noted academic and retired professor Jyotiprakash Tamuli, in honour of the eminent scholar Pandit Kaliram Medhi, a pioneering figure in Assamese linguistics.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Mahanta paid tribute to Kaliram Medhi’s enduring contributions to Assamese language studies, describing him as a scholar whose systematic linguistic approach and rigorous research laid the foundation for the structured and scientific study of Assamese. He noted that Medhi’s ideas continue to remain relevant and serve as a source of inspiration for contemporary scholars.

The memorial lecture, organised by the Department of Assamese, was titled “Kaliram Medhi aru Asomiya Bhashatatwik Chinta Srotar Unmekh: Prasanga, Pratisruti aru Prabah.” In his address, Prof. Tamuli reflected on the deeper dimensions of language, observing that it is not merely a collection of words but a reflection of thought, culture and social consciousness. Referring to Kaliram Medhi’s scholarly legacy, he noted that Medhi’s work established language as a living and evolving social expression, and emphasised the responsibility of the present generation to carry forward this intellectual tradition.

Dr. Shyam Bhadra Medhi attended the programme as a distinguished guest. On the occasion, Jasmin Choudhury, who secured the highest marks in the M.A. Assamese programme under Gauhati University in 2025, was presented with the Kaliram Medhi Memorial Award in recognition of her academic excellence.

The programme was attended by Prof. Kamaluddin Ahmed, Head of the Department of Assamese, along with faculty members, research scholars and students.
