Haflong, January 25 Several organizations in Dima Hasao, including Jadikhe Naisho Hosom (JNH), Dimasa Mother’s Association, All Dimasa Students Union (ADSU), and Dimasa Students Union (DSU), observed 'Black Day' on Sunday to remember two youths martyred by security forces eight years ago.
Hundreds gathered at Lal Field in Haflong to pay tributes by candle lighting to the portraits of Mithun Dibragede and Probonto Hakmaosa, who lost their lives on January 25, 2018, during a protest in Maibang.
The commemorations stem from events on January 18, 2018, when RSS worker Jagdamba Mall reportedly advocated including lands from eight districts—including Dima Hasao—in the proposed "Greater Nagalim" accord. In response, local social and student organizations called a 12-hour bandh on January 25. Thousands protested peacefully at Maibang, blocking the railway track against the inclusion of Dima Hasao territory.
As the agitation was set to end, security forces led by the then Superintendent of Police and Deputy Commissioner allegedly assaulted protesters and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of the two youths and injuries to many others. Since then, organizations have marked January 25 as 'Black Day.'
DSU general secretary Pramith Sengyung stated that the observance is taking place across Dimasa-inhabited areas. He demanded withdrawal of cases against the agitators and justice for the victims' families, noting that their concerns remain unaddressed.
Former JNH president Kailen Daulagupu echoed these demands, adding that while some issues have been resolved, key grievances persist.
