Several Students Organisations Announce Mass Rally at Haflong on December 3

Haflong, December1: In protest against the Assam government’s recent cabinet decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and Sixth Schedule protections to six communities—Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes—several student organisations in the region have called for a mass rally in Haflong on December 3.

Leaders from Dimasa Students Union, Kuki Students Organisation Assam, Zeme Students Union Assam, All Dimasa Students Union, Hmar Students Association Assam, among others, jointly announced this call during a press conference held at the Dimasa Students Union office on Monday.

The student groups have expressed strong reservations about the government’s decision, asserting that the move threatens the rights and identity of the indigenous communities in the region. The rally aims to raise public awareness and urge the government to reconsider the recent cabinet order.

The organisations have appealed to students, youth, and local communities to participate in large numbers to ensure a peaceful but firm demonstration of dissent.
