Gauhati University Professors Feature in Stanford’s World’s top 2% Scientists List



Guwahati, October 1: Gauhati University has achieved a proud milestone with three of its professors earning a place in the World’s Top 2% Scientists List 2025, compiled by Stanford University. This international recognition reinforces the university’s rising stature in global research and academic excellence.

The three faculty members were recognised in the career-long impact category, reflecting their sustained research contributions. Prof. Bhupendra Nath Goswami, Professor of Excellence, achieved a global rank of 22,145; Prof. Prodeep Phukan, Department of Chemistry, secured 142,822; and Prof. Bipan Hazarika, Department of Mathematics, earned 361,120.

In addition, based on 2024 citation performance, their research impact remained significant. Prof. Goswami attained rank 18,265; Prof. Hazarika was placed at 148,503; and Dr. Ranjit Thakuria, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, secured 270,404.

The comprehensive rankings are curated annually by Professor John PA Ioannidis and his team at Stanford University, using rigorous criteria including citation metrics, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, authorship position citations, and a composite indicator known as the c-score. The 2025 list highlights India’s expanding research footprint, featuring 6,239 researchers in the single-year category and 3,372 in the career-long category.

Commenting on the achievement, Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta said: “This recognition is a matter of great pride for Gauhati University and for Assam. It speaks volumes about the dedication, innovation, and global impact of our faculty. This marks the second consecutive year that Gauhati University faculty have been featured in Stanford’s Top 2% list. The honour not only highlights the exceptional individual contributions of GU’s faculty members but also reflects the institution’s collective drive towards research, innovation, and global knowledge leadership.
