Haflong Sept 20 : Maibang Degree College a 'B' grade NAAC accredited, situated in the picturesque district of Dima Hasao, Assam, stands as a prominent institution committed to fostering higher education across Arts and Science disciplines claimed Sujit Kumar Sinha , Principal, Maibang Degree college while talking to visiting media persons recently.
He said with pride that with a rich legacy in Arts education, the college has recently embarked on significant expansion to incorporate Science studies and advanced degree programs, under the proactive guidance of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC).
Since the sanctioning of the Science stream in 2020, Maibang Degree College has steadily established its foothold in scientific education, launching undergraduate courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, and Zoology. The academic session for the Science stream officially began in 2024 with the support of a dedicated team of contractual faculty members. The college anticipates the appointment of regular science faculty by October 2025, further strengthening its teaching cadre. Currently, the college serves approximately 610 students in Arts and 17 in Science, with an academic staff totaling 23 regular Arts teachers and 15 Science teachers, supplemented by 94 contractual teaching staff in the Arts stream.
In response to the growing educational demands of the region, Maibang Degree College has initiated proposals through the DHAC to commence Master’s degree courses across a diverse range of subjects, including English, Sociology, Education, Political Science, Bengali, History, alongside advanced studies in Zoology and Botany. This development marks a significant milestone, aimed at providing local students with access to postgraduate education within their own district.
Furthering its commitment to educational excellence, the college is set to introduce the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), the evolved form of the erstwhile Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course. This program will train and equip future educators, ensuring high standards in regional school education and contributing to the overall upliftment of teaching quality in Assam.
The College campus, sprawling over 100 bighas, is divided into two main sections. The primary campus houses the Arts and Science faculties, the Administrative Block, a stadium, staff quarters, and an extensive botanical garden covering 90 bighas. Additionally, 10 bighas have been allocated for the construction of the new ITEP Block, reflecting the institution’s growth trajectory and infrastructural development plans.
With a dedicated team of 54 regular employees and 18 contractual staff members, Maibang Degree College continues to nurture an environment of academic rigor, inclusivity, and community engagement. The college’s evolution from a traditional Arts institution to a multifaceted center of learning embodies its vision to empower students and contribute meaningfully to the intellectual and social progress of the region.
